The Headies Awards, Nigeria’s most prestigious music recognition platform, is gearing up for an unforgettable 2025.
During a highly anticipated event in Victoria Island, Lagos, organizers made major announcements that will redefine the awards show and its impact on the industry.
Here are the ten biggest takeaways:
Two Headies ceremonies in one Year
For the first time in history, the award ceremony will hold two editions in a single year. The 17th edition is set for April 5, 2025, honouring music released in 2024, while the 18th edition will follow in December.
A return home after U.S. detour
Following a few editions that were held in the U.S., the award ceremony is making a grand return to Nigeria in 2024. Founder Ayo Animashaun revealed that while the international move showcased Afrobeats globally, the decision to bring it back home was driven by industry feedback.
Lagos State to partner with The Headies
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu pledged Lagos State’s support, calling The Headies the “crème de la crème” of African music awards. He highlighted its role in strengthening Nigeria’s entertainment sector.
A ‘mad car‘ prize for Next Rated Award winner
The highly coveted Next Rated category just got more competitive—its winner will drive home a mad car. Ayo Animashaun, the founder of the award ceremony, explained that this upgrade ensures artists take their car prizes more seriously.
Launch of The Headies Foundation
The Headies Foundation, which has been quietly making an impact behind the scenes, was officially announced. The foundation would focus on supporting creative industry initiatives.
A New Headies board is incoming
Animashaun revealed that a new board for The Headies is in the works. The selection process is underway, with key industry figures expected to shape the awards’ future.
The Headies Creative Summit debuts
In a bid to expand its influence, The Headies will launch a Creative Summit, bridging the gap between music, film, animation, and other creative sectors. The summit will take place both in Nigeria and internationally.

Sponsorship and Industry support are crucial
Animashaun credited sponsors like Multichoice, HipTV, and DStv for sustaining the awards despite economic challenges. He urged continued support from brands and stakeholders. In the same vein, Ayeni Adekunle, Netng’s founder and convener of NECLive urged all industry players to work together and build an industry that can dominate the world.
Eko Hotel remains the home of The Headies
Despite its brief stint abroad, the award ceremony reaffirmed its long-standing relationship with Eko Hotel, where the awards have historically been held.

Fans Must Take Voting Seriously
Mr Yinka Adebayo of MediaReach OMD Nigeria called on fans to actively vote for their favourite artists, emphasizing that engagement, not just discussion, determines winners.
With these major highlights, The Headies 2025 is shaping up to be its most dynamic and impactful edition yet.
