Arsenal fans can finally ease a sigh of relief after their club confirmed the signing of Viktor Gyökeres on a long-term deal ahead of the 2025/26 football season.

Arsenal announced the arrival of the Swedish international on Saturday, July 26, 2025, which sparked joy among the Gunners supporters. He joins Arsenal on 5 year deal after €63.5m plus €10m add-ons agreement with Sporting Lisbon.

Gyökeres is a prolific striker and he had in the past shown what he is capable of doing whenever he is in front of the opposition’s goal post.

Here are five things you need to know about Viktor Gyökeres

(1) Prolific Scorer

Gyökeres scored a staggering 97 goals and 28 assists in just 102 appearances during his two seasons at Sporting CP. He led the Primeira Liga in scoring in both the 2023–24 (29 goals) and 2024–25 (39 goals) seasons and was awarded Bola de Prata and Player of the Year honors in 2024.

(2) History maker

Arsenal have secured Gyökeres in a huge transfer deal worth approximately £63.5 million (€63.5 m), plus up to £8.7 m in add-ons, making him one of the most expensive transfers in their history. He signed a five-year contract and is expected to earn around £300,000 per week, making him one of the club’s highest-paid players.

(3) Iconic jersey number

Gyökeres will have a big boot to fill after he was given the legendary No. 14 jersey which was previously worn by Thierry Henry. This signing marks Arsenal’s first signing of a forward player since Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang in 2018.

(4) Physicality:

Gyökeres is known for his blend of speed, power, and aerial ability, he is being described as a “physical machine” on the field and a serious handful for defenders .

(5) Controversial exit:

Gyökeres reportedly missed 13 days of training, spending time on holiday, to push for a move. This led to a €350,000 fine from Sporting’s president, which he accepted to help finalize the transfer. However both parties reached a “gentleman’s agreement” to allow his exit at season’s end.

In conclusion, Arsenal fans will hope that Viktor Gyökeres will finally bring the Premier League title to their club for the first time since 2004.
