Football history and heritage are intrinsic to the game, shaping its evolution and adding depth to its narratives. In acknowledging this, we’ve curated a list of seven players who’ve left an indelible mark by representing both Chelsea and Manchester City.

This selection not only highlights the intertwined nature of football clubs but also celebrates the journey of players who’ve contributed to the rich tapestry of both clubs’ histories.

Who are the players that have played for both Chelsea and Manchester City?

Wayne Bridge

Bridge played for the Blues between 2003 and 2009 and was a member of the renowned Chelsea team led by Jose Mourinho, which secured victory in the 2004-2005 Premier League season with an impressive 95-point total. Following his time at Chelsea, the English left-back transferred to Manchester City for the 2009-2011 season but failed to replicate his previous level of performance.

Nicolas Anelka

Anelka during his stint as a footballer played for several clubs including Chelsea and Manchester City. He became a part of Manchester City in 2002 and played for two and a half years, during which he scored 46 goals for them. He later joined Chelsea in 2008 where he showcased his exceptional skills. With Chelsea, he won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2008-09 season.

Shaun Wright-Phillips

Shaun Wright-Phillips became a part of the Cityzens in 1999 and remained with them until 2005. During this time, he clinched the Manchester City Young Player of the Year award for four consecutive seasons, spanning from 1999 to 2003, and also secured the club’s Player of the Year title in 2004. His exceptional speed and agility caught Chelsea’s attention, leading to his transfer, although it didn’t yield the anticipated success at Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, he did contribute to Chelsea’s Premier League victory in the 2005-06 season. Wright-Phillips returned to City in 2008, staying until 2011 before eventually moving on to QPR.

Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge began his professional career with Manchester City in 2006 and remained with the squad until 2009. Following his tenure at City, he made a move to Chelsea in London. Despite not being a constant fixture in the starting lineup during his time at Chelsea, he achieved significant success, winning major titles such as the Champions League, Premier League, and two FA Cups.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling, who joined Chelsea this season, is one of the most high-profile signings. He began his career at Liverpool, achieved great success at Manchester United, and arrived at Chelsea as an established player. Sterling was signed by Cityzens from Liverpool in 2015 and remained a consistent member of the team until his departure in 2022, featuring in over 200 matches and scoring nearly 90 goals. Under the guidance of coach Pep Guardiola, he also won four Premier League titles with the team.

Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne rose to fame after being let go by Chelsea. Despite being with the team from 2012 to 2014. After completing a loan move to Bremen, he was sent to Wolfsburg. Manchester City later acquired him from Wolfsburg, where he became a world-class player and one of the best midfielders in the world, thanks to the guidance of coach Pep Guardiola. He remains an essential and irreplaceable member of Manchester City’s team.

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard, a true Chelsea legend and one of the most distinguished English players, had a remarkable career that included a stint with Manchester City towards the twilight of his playing days. From 2001 to 2014, Lampard epitomized Chelsea, becoming inseparable from the club. His contributions were pivotal as he helped Chelsea secure three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a Champions League title, and a Europa League title, among other accolades. Notably, Lampard holds the record for the highest number of goals scored for Chelsea, a testament to his incredible impact on the team.

In the 2014-2015 season, Lampard temporarily donned the colours of Manchester City before ultimately transitioning to the MLS.
