Chelsea FC have reportedly made a U-turn for another Nigerian player instead of Victor Osimhen, the African Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2023.

Reports suggest that Chelsea Football Club is interested in acquiring the services of Bayer Leverkusen’s young striker, Victor Boniface, during the upcoming summer transfer window. The 23-year-old Nigerian player has been a standout performer for Leverkusen since his move from Belgian Pro League club Union SG in July 2023.

Boniface has been in one of the best form of his career, having scored ten goals and provided seven assists for his teammates in just sixteen Bundesliga matches. He has also netted sixteen times in twenty-three games across all competitions, making him one of the hottest prospects in German football.

Leverkusen is currently unbeaten in the Bundesliga after twenty-two matches and sits eight points clear of second-placed Bayern Munich. Boniface’s impressive performances have caught the attention of several top clubs, including Chelsea, who are keen to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The Blues are reportedly on the lookout for a new central-striking option and have identified Boniface as a potential target.

According to Fichajes, Chelsea is willing to pay the €40m (£34.2m) transfer fee that Leverkusen has placed on the young Nigerian striker. The Blues had signed Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku ahead of the current season to solve their attacking problems. However, Nkunku has only featured in seven Premier League matches due to injury, while Jackson has managed to score only seven goals in twenty-two top-flight appearances.

Boniface’s performances in Germany have been impressive, and he has drawn interest from several clubs across Europe. It remains to be seen if Chelsea can secure his services, but the Blues’ interest is a testament to the young striker’s potential and talent. With the prospect of European football next season, Chelsea is looking to add more firepower to their attacking lineup, and Boniface could be the perfect addition to their squad.
