Former Manchester City and AC Milan player, Robinho to nine years imprisonment for raping a woman when he was with the Serie A giants.
The Brazilian was sentenced in Italy to nine years jail term for the part he took in a group sexual assault in 2013 when he played for AC Milan. It is the rule in Brazil not to extradite nationals, this led to the Italian court seeking he serve the jail term in Brazil.
However, a Brazilian court has now ruled that he must serve out the prison sentence in Brazil. The judges on Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice voted 9-2 to validate Robinho’s conviction, he could still appeal to his country’s Supreme Court.
There are reports that there could be a diplomatic friction between Brazil and Italy if the former player does not serve his sentence. According to Robinho’s lawyer, Jose Eduardo Alckmin, he could still appeal the decision, he said that his client wanted a retrial in Brazil on grounds of national sovereignty.
