The German Bundesliga has not seen a lot of Nigerians grace its turf since the inception of the competition over a century ago but the few that have played there have been outstanding.
While a handful of Nigerians, which include the likes of Austin Okocha, Obafemi Martins, Victor Osimhen and Victor Ikpeba, have played in the German Bundesliga. Pascal Ojigwe was the first Nigerian to win the title followed by the former captain of the Super Eagles Sunday Oliseh.
Oliseh won the trophy while he was with Borussia Dortmund during the 2001/02 football season while, Pascal won the German league title with Kaiserslautern during the 1997/98 season respectively.
Super Eagles stars Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella increased the number of Nigerians that have won the title from two to four. Both players wrote their names in gold into German football history on Sunday, April 14, 2024, playing a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s stunning 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.
This emphatic win secured Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title, finally ending Bayern Munich’s dominance of the league. They achieved this feat by scoring 74 goals and conceding just 19, with zero defeats, this victory ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign as Champions of Germany.
