Popular Nigerian singer, Davido, expressed relief after his close associate, Cubana Chief Priest (real name Pascal Okechukwu), was granted bail following his arraignment for allegedly abusing the Naira.

Cubana Chief Priest was brought before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on charges bordering on disrespecting the national currency. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented a three-count charge against him.

News reports detailed that Cubana Chief Priest pleaded not guilty to the charges. This prompted a reaction from Davido who, according to Daily Post, commented online, “I no go see u for 6 months ke… Never” (Not gonna see you for 6 months? Never). This likely referenced the recent sentencing of another public figure, Bobrisky, to jail time for a similar offense.

Eventually, Cubana Chief Priest was granted bail for N10 million with two sureties in the same amount. He has yet to make a public statement regarding the trial’s outcome.

This incident highlights Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of its national currency. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has strict regulations against defacing, spraying, or otherwise mishandling the Naira.

While Davido’s initial reaction suggests concern about his friend’s potential jail time, Cubana Chief Priest’s successful bail application offers some closure. The case serves as a reminder to Nigerians about the importance of respecting the country’s currency.
