Reports indicate that Chelsea have finalised the appointment of a former Super Eagles of Nigeria player in a talent management capacity.

Chelsea have appointed former Nigerian international Seyi Olofinjana to a talent management role focused on Africa.

Olofinjana earned 56 caps for Nigeria and played 147 matches, scoring 18 goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers between 2004 and 2008. He also had spells at Championship clubs Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday and played in the Premier League with Stoke City and Hull City.

After retiring in 2014 following a brief period in Norway, Olofinjana took on roles in under-23 coaching and development at Wolves, including a position as loans and pathways manager. He later served as Sporting Director at Grasshoppers Zurich in Switzerland until 2022. He holds a UEFA pro coaching license.

According to the Athletic Seyi Olofinjana in his new role at Chelsea, Olofinjana will be responsible for recruitment recommendations across Africa, working with a newly appointed scout for the region. Olofinjana began his career in Nigeria with Crown FC and Kwara United before moving to Norwegian club SK Brann in 2003. A year later, he joined Wolves in England.

Given his extensive experience and expertise, Olofinjana’s role will focus on enhancing Chelsea’s connections in Africa and streamlining the pathway for players to join the London club and BlueCo’s sister team, Strasbourg, in France. He will also assist players in settling in and adapting once they arrive at their new clubs.

In addition to his football career, Olofinjana holds degrees in chemical engineering and sports directorship. He is also the executive director of Nigerian third-division side Imperial FC, near his hometown of Lagos, where he has developed an academy and scouted talent, including Taiwo Awoniyi, who transferred to Liverpool in 2015 and now plays for Nottingham Forest.
