Atletico Madrid have been handed a 3-match partial stadium ban following the action of their fans in the fixture against Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid has faced disciplinary action from the RFEF’s competition committee, including a partial stadium ban, following troubling incidents during their heated derby match against Real Madrid.

The game, held on September 29, 2024, was disrupted when missiles were thrown at Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, leading to a temporary stoppage by the referee. These chaotic scenes have resulted in significant consequences for Atletico Madrid.

The RFEF has imposed a three-match partial stadium closure, specifically targeting the “Fondo Sur” section of the Estadio Metropolitano, where the projectiles originated.

In addition to the stadium ban, Atletico Madrid has been fined €45,000 (£37,000/$49,000). This punishment sends a clear message from the Spanish football federation that such unsportsmanlike behaviour will not be tolerated.

Following the widely condemned actions of a few rogue fans, attention now shifts to how Atletico Madrid will respond and what steps the club will take to prevent similar incidents in the future.

What happened in the Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid match?

The unrest began shortly after Eder Militao scored for Real Madrid, putting them ahead in the match. A barrage of objects, including plastic bottles, lighters, and even a bag of trash, was directed at Courtois.

Despite three warnings from the referee, the situation worsened, eventually forcing the official to pause the game in accordance with UEFA’s safety protocols, which prioritize the well-being of both players and spectators.

This incident has raised concerns about crowd management and security at the Estadio Metropolitano, which could have broader implications for the club.

The Fondo Sur section will be closed for Atletico Madrid’s next three home matches, affecting games against Leganes, Las Palmas, and Alaves.

Although the punishment is a strong statement against the fan misconduct, Atletico Madrid still has the option to appeal the decision handed down by the RFEF’s competition committee.
