Ex-Premier League coach Harry Redknapp has reacted to the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the manager of England.

Thomas Tuchel has officially been announced as the new England manager, set to take over on January 1, 2025. While this appointment has stirred up some controversy—most notably from Harry Redknapp, who voiced his displeasure—Tuchel’s strong coaching résumé is undeniable. The German coach’s accolades include winning the UEFA Champions League and being named both UEFA and FIFA Coach of the Year in 2021.

Tuchel has also secured league titles in France with Paris Saint-Germain and in Germany with Bayern Munich. He will be supported by English coach Anthony Barry, his trusted assistant from their days at Chelsea and Bayern Munich. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, all eyes will be on how Tuchel’s leadership and tactical approach shape England’s campaign.

The FA’s Chief Executive, Mark Bullingham, has expressed confidence in Tuchel’s ability to lead England to success on the world stage. He emphasized that Tuchel’s experience and track record will give the national team the best chance of winning a major tournament.

Tuchel’s prior success in England, particularly his Champions League triumph with Chelsea in 2021, likely set him apart from other candidates like Pep Guardiola, Eddie Howe, and Graham Potter. However, not everyone is in agreement with this choice. Harry Redknapp has been vocal about his disappointment, questioning Tuchel’s suitability for the role and expressing a preference for an English manager.

Redknapp shared his frustrations with Sky Sports, stating, “He’s come and gone at a few clubs. I’m very patriotic and believe we should have an English manager, but the options were limited. English managers rarely get opportunities in the Premier League now, and it’s disheartening considering the FA’s investment in coaching courses.”

Redknapp also pointed out the unique challenges of managing a national team, highlighting that it’s different from club management where there’s more time to develop and implement tactics. He noted, “You need to make the players feel proud to play for their country and use a bit of common sense in team selection. But with the limited time you get to work with them, it’s not like you’re really coaching them.”

Despite Redknapp’s criticisms, England’s captain, Harry Kane, has welcomed Tuchel’s appointment, describing him as both a “fantastic coach” and a “fantastic person.” The contrast in opinions sets the stage for a fascinating journey as Tuchel aims to bring his high-energy, attacking style to the England national team, hoping to make a significant impact leading up to the World Cup.
