Nigerian-American actor and singer Rotimi born Olurotimi Akinosho recently shared details about his past record deal with American rapper and actor 50 Cent (Curtis James Jackson III).
In an interview with DJ Vlad shared online on Monday, October 21, 2024, Rotimi disclosed that 50 Cent made $300,000 from his music.
Rotimi explained the circumstances surrounding the debt: “So there is truth to the $300,000 that I did owe him, however it’s because I was signed to him. So in being signed to him, anyone who has a deal knows that the label puts up money, which is basically a loan.”
Meanwhile, after being released from their record deal, Rotimi became independent, but 50 Cent stipulated repayment terms: “So he let me go, so what happened is, he let me out of my deal, and he was like, ‘Just pay me back in $300,000 worth of mechanicals,’ which means whatever money that my music makes on any platform, he would get a percentage of it until that debt is paid back.”
Additionally, Rotimi shared a surprising conversation with 50 Cent following his success with the EP Walk With Me, which topped the R&B charts for four days:
“He calls me one day and was like, ‘Listen, I had just put out an EP called “Walk With Me”… He saw that I had won, but he was like, ‘Yo, I got an idea. I’m gonna say you owe me $300,000, I’m gonna say I wanna punch your face in, I’m gonna say that I don’t f**k with you.'”
Lastly, Rotimi’s revelation offers insight into the business side of the music industry and 50 Cent’s strategic investments.
