Pep Guardiola has addressed his statement about harming himself after Man City’s shocking draw in the UEFA Champions League.

Pep Guardiola has issued an apology following backlash over his remarks after Man City’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The controversy arose during the post-match press conference when Guardiola was asked about a scratch on his nose. Explaining the mark, he said, “My finger, here [gesturing to his nose]. My nail. I want to harm myself.” The statement was met with backlash after the interview.

Guardiola in an official statement on social media has clarified his comments and offered an apology. “During the press conference, I was caught off guard by a question about a scratch on my face. I explained that it was caused accidentally by my fingernail,” he said.

“My response was in no way intended to downplay the serious issue of self-harm. I recognize the challenges many face with mental health, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone struggling to seek help. Guardiola is currently facing mounting pressure at Manchester City, as the team is now winless in six consecutive matches across all competitions. Despite leading 3-0 against Feyenoord, with goals from Erling Haaland and Ilkay Gundogan, City conceded three late goals in the final 15 minutes, raising further doubts about their prospects for silverware this season.

Reflecting on the result, Guardiola admitted the outcome was tough to accept. He stated, “It’s very difficult to digest right now. The game was good. We scored three, could have scored more, but we gave away the first goal, and after that, we weren’t stable enough. It’s not about effort or commitment, but in football, there are key moments you need to handle better. The second goal came from the second post improve, what else can you do? We’ll rest for a day or two and then prepare for Anfield.”

City will now face a critical test against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, a match seen as pivotal to their season.
