Stan Alieke, lawyer to Nigerian Musician, Speed Darlington, has cried out over the continued detention of his client by the Nigeria Police.
Alieke took to Instagram on Wednesday to make this outcry.
Fellow lawyer. Deji Adeyanju, and other human rights activists point to the fact that “Akpi” as Darlington is commonly referred to, was arrested after fellow musician, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu aka Burna Boy filed a complaint against him.
According to him, today marks a week since the Police detained the celebrity.
The lawyer insists that Darlington is entitled to his constitutional right of freedom and should be allowed bail.
“Today marks exactly one week since my client, Mr Darlington Achakpo, also known as Speed Darlington, was re-arrested and detained by the @nigeriapoliceforce.
“He has been in custody ever since. The police should not violate his constitutional rights while purportedly enforcing someone else’s rights. He is entitled to bail and should be granted the same,” Darlington’s lawyer wrote.
Reports suggest that Darlington was being moved from Owerii to the police Force Intelligence Department (FID) in the federal capital territory (FCT, Abuja.
“Burna Boy behind harassment of Speed Darlington by the police. This is someone who has been singing against oppression and forming junior Fela now oppressing Akpi,” lawyer, Adeyanju, wrote on the matter.
Human rights activists have now called on the Police to stop the illegal detention and release Darlington.
