Black Cat Bones are back with their first single since the passing of vocalist and founding member Kobus de Kock Jnr, and it’s a rousing offering of both grief and hope that stays true to the band’s trademark blues sound.
Titled “Hail Mary at 99″, Bones are joined by Southern Gypsy Queen legend Gareth Wilson on vocals, who’s earthy and charismatic delivery brings a special kind of rawness to the song.
His delivery is complemented by congregational-style backing vocals and an infectious hook, carrying an uplifting optimism that makes you want to sing along.
But there are surprising touches of gospel and southern rock influence too, making for a deeply moving track that is packed with emotional intensity.
At its heart, “Hail Mary at 99″ is a search for healing, and a reminder that through music and movement, we find solace and strength. It carries the heavy weight of loss, but in a way that feels like a release of sorts; an exhalation of sorrow, and a hopeful reminder that the world can still be beautiful, even through pain.
