The local hardcore scene has often been criticised for its tendency towards sameness and a lack of originality, but Cape Town’s The Talon are proof that this narrative can be untrue.
The band are carving out a space for themselves with something slightly different, and their latest single “Possessor” showcases a fresh take on modern metallic hardcore.
Melodic and groove-driven, the track blends elements of metalcore, hardcore punk and post-hardcore, defined by its near flawless shifts between clean vocals and raw, aggressive screaming.
Accompanying the track is also a performance video that channels a DIY feel, filmed in an intimate, confined space which perfectly mirrors the raw energy of the band’s sound. However, while the stripped-back visuals add to the gritty feel of the song, they don’t always land as powerfully as they could.
Despite this, “Possessor” stands out as an exciting example of genre fusion and confident execution. The band’s ability to merge various hardcore sub-genres into something both memorable and fresh speaks to their potential for growth in the local scene. If you’re in need of a new anthem to fuel your two-step, The Talon has just delivered it.
