HARARE, Zimbabwe – Part 4 students from the University of Zimbabwe’s Department of Creative Media and Communication are set to host the inaugural SASA Mental Health Festival, a groundbreaking event blending arts and health to promote mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

By Plot Mhako

The Festival, scheduled for 29 and 30 May 2024, will take place both online and at physical venues across Zimbabwe. It is directed by Courage Chinokwetu, with Getrude Munhamo Pfumayaramba and Danifa Wachenuka serving as festival coordinators.

The SASA Mental Health Festival leverages the transformative power of the arts to encourage dialogue and innovation in mental health advocacy. By bringing together artists, healthcare professionals, researchers, students, and policymakers, the Festival seeks to create a platform for meaningful conversations, resource sharing, and collaborative solutions.

“This Festival is a response to the growing recognition of the arts as a dynamic force in promoting wellness, resilience, and healing,” said Courage Chinokwetu. “We aim to inspire youth to openly engage in conversations about mental health, equipping them with the tools and support they need.”

The initiative stems from a baseline survey conducted with University of Zimbabwe students in June 2024. The findings highlighted key stressors, including academic pressure, failed relationships, financial constraints, and pursuing degrees under parental pressure.

Recognizing these challenges, the Festival is designed to:

1. Raise Awareness about common youth mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and stress.
