The recent gesture in the Tottenham vs Liverpool Carabao Cup fixture has raised questions about the future of VAR in English football.

Speculations about a possible change in the direction of VAR in English football have surfaced online following the recent event in the Tottenham vs Liverpool Carabao Cup fixture played on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Stuart Attwell made history on Wednesday night by becoming the first referee in English football to communicate a VAR decision directly to fans. This milestone occurred during the Carabao Cup semi-final clash between Tottenham and Liverpool, where Attwell used the stadium’s PA system to explain a crucial offside ruling.

The incident involved Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke, whose apparent goal was disallowed after a tight offside review. Attwell’s explanation marks the beginning of a new initiative aimed at enhancing transparency in football by keeping supporters more informed about VAR decisions.

That moment represented a significant advancement in VAR’s role within English football. It remains to be seen how players, officials, and supporters will respond as this approach is implemented more widely in the coming months. Attwell’s words over the PA system were clear: “After review, Dominic Solanke was in an offside position in the build-up to the goal, my decision is offside.”

Another contentious moment in the game came when Lucas Bergvall’s aggressive tackle on Kostas Tsimikas raised questions. Already on a yellow card, Bergvall narrowly avoided being sent off, a decision that many felt was lenient.

His fortunes turned even further when he scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, securing a vital 1-0 advantage for Tottenham ahead of the second leg at Anfield. Liverpool players and staff, including Virgil van Dijk and manager Arne Slot, were vocal about their disappointment. Van Dijk argued that Bergvall’s challenge warranted a second booking, while Slot lamented the game-changing nature of the decision.

Despite the controversy, Bergvall’s winning strike was a moment of brilliance that highlighted his rising talent. Tottenham will be counting on him to deliver again in the return fixture, while Liverpool aims to overturn the deficit on home turf to keep their cup hopes alive.

Given the success of this style of VAR in the women’s football at the international level, many are of the opinion that this could be a shift that fans will get to see in English football and possibly all top flight football competitions in Europe as a whole.
