In an inspiring collaboration born of spontaneity and shared passion, Gabonese artist Ya Minko and African American singer-songwriter Sean Davy have unveiled the remix of “Skedaddle,” a track that captures the essence of their unique musical identities. The remix is part of Ya Minko’s farewell project, Songs To Break Up With My Music Dreams To, marking a pivotal moment in his career as he steps away from the industry to prioritize his personal life.
The collaboration began unexpectedly when Sean Davy shared an Instagram video of himself playing bass to the original “Skedaddle” track. Struck by Sean’s talent, Ya Minko reached out, leading to a conversation that culminated in the remix. The two artists met at The Hollow Studios in Silver Spring, where they bonded over candid discussions about life, dreams, and the music industry before Sean recorded his verse.
The track is a rich fusion of staccato rap, Afrohouse beats, and tropical melodies, embodying Ya Minko’s self-described “Afropolitan Hip-Fusion” sound. Sean Davy’s soulful versatility pairs seamlessly with Ya Minko’s emotionally charged storytelling, creating a soundscape that is both innovative and universally resonant. The remix explores themes of love, escapism, and gratitude, with its hook, “Do you wanna get out of here? Let’s skedaddle,” symbolizing a longing to escape societal pressures and find solace in meaningful connections.
The visually compelling music video, directed by Trevor Brooks of D.O.P.E. Muzik & Visuals and co-directed by Jeanne d’Udekem d’Acoz, amplifies the track’s energy. Filmed at Hollow Studios, the video showcases members of the Open Circles creative collective, including Ya Minko, Trevor, and Jeanne, alongside DMV-based talents Ikea Damone and N.Y.N.E. The collaboration reflects a community-driven ethos, highlighting the importance of connection and mutual support in the creative process.
For Ya Minko, the release of Songs To Break Up With My Music Dreams To is deeply personal. Following the earlier release of his EP Executive Dysfunction At The Function, the artist is taking a step back to focus on building stability outside the music industry. “This project is my goodbye letter to the version of my dreams I’ve chased for the past 10 years,” Minko shares. “I’ve given it my all, but it’s time to prioritize my well-being and relationships. If music circles back into my life, it will be on different terms.”
Sean Davy, whose multicultural roots span Jamaica, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria, brings his dynamic artistry to the remix. Known for blending Afro, Caribbean soul, and R&B/Hip-Hop, Sean has toured globally, playing bass for artists like Davido, Olamide, and Teni. “I loved the original track, and I’m thrilled we were able to create something special with this remix,” Sean says.
“Skedaddle” is a testament to the power of collaboration, artistic identity, and the universal language of music. The remix is now available on all major streaming platforms, inviting listeners to experience the vibrant synergy of two talented artists.
