29-year-old Madison Keys staged another upset in the final of the Australian Open as she defeated Aryan Sabalenka to win her first-ever grand slam title in her career.
The American won the final match of the Australian Open women’s category in a thrilling three-set match which ended 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Madison Keys came into this competition as the 19th seed to become the winner against the expectations of a lot of people following after two hours and two minutes of hard-hitting tennis on Rod Laver Arena.
Sabalenka was looking to join the likes of Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Stefanie Graf, Monica Seles, and Martina Hingis as the only women to win the Australian Open three in a row having won her first two majors at the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024.
What did Madison Keys say about her victory?
“Firstly, Aryna, unbelievable playing, I am glad I finally got you back. I have wanted this for so long. I have been in one other Grand Slam final, but it did not go my way and I didn’t know if I was ever going to get back to this position to try to win a trophy again. And my team believed in me every step of the way so thank you so much.”
Keys lost her first Grand Slam final, to fellow American Sloane Stephens at the U.S. Open in 2017. However, she never gave up and will be going home $2.2 million with the title, while Sabalenka receives $1.2 million.
