Ruden Amorim in his latest pre-match press conference has opened up on the reason behind Man United’s decision to not sign a replacement for Rashford and Antony.
Rúben Amorim has acknowledged that Man United have taken a “risk” by opting not to sign replacements for both Marcus Rashford and Antony during the January 2025 transfer window, a decision he believes could put the club in “danger.”
Despite offloading forwards Marcus Rashford and Antony on loan to Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively, United limited their winter spending to £31 million, bringing in defenders Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.
Amorim explained that the club chose to wait until the summer rather than using their restricted budget on players who do not fit his long-term vision. However, he admitted that this decision comes with inherent risks, especially with United currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table.
He revealed, “I know when I chose this profession that you have the risk of results. I knew when I came here, I looked at the schedule, I looked at the team—it was my decision. Changing everything in the middle of the season without new signings is a danger for a coach. But I have a clear idea of what I want to do, and I take these risks because, in the end, it’s going to pay off. But I’m not naive. I said that many times—this is a sport of results, and we are in a difficult situation.”
The United manager reiterated that the club is taking a measured approach, prioritizing the long-term vision over short-term fixes. He went on to add, “Guys, in the summer. Like we said before, we are fighting for our jobs until the summer. I am just focused on these games. Marcus is in Birmingham now with Unai, so you can direct the questions to another coach. We are just focused on our players.”
Amorim also stressed that United are being cautious with transfers to avoid repeating past mistakes stating, “What I feel is that the club is taking its time. We know the urgency of the moment for the team, but everybody here doesn’t want to make the same mistakes of the past. In the summer, we will see, but like I said, we are being really careful with transfers because we did make some mistakes before.”
He acknowledged that the team is facing a tough challenge but remains committed to his approach. “I think it’s a moment that is hard to turn things around in just a few games. It’s going to be like that—really hard until the end of the season. We are taking that risk you talk about. We want something different in the team, different profiles in that area, and it was my decision to do that. We are taking some risks, but it is the way we want to proceed. We want to win some games, and we have time to train because I’m always complaining about that. I want a certain type of player with a different profile, and we are changing right away.”
