South African sensation Tyla has tied the long-standing record for African female artists on the Billboard World Albums chart with her album TYLA.

South African singer Tyla has achieved a remarkable milestone with her self-titled debut album, TYLA, which has now spent 50 weeks on the Billboard World Albums chart as she joined the legendary Cesária Évora as the only female African artists to stay that long on the chart.

The album’s lead single, “Water,” became a viral sensation, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving multi-platinum certifications in several countries.

The album received widespread acclaim for its innovative fusion of genres, including Amapiano, R&B, and Afrobeats. Critics praised Tyla’s versatility and vocal prowess, with Pitchfork highlighting her “savvy” singing ability and Rolling Stone noting her effectiveness as an ambassador for Amapiano.

Tyla’s achievement is particularly noteworthy when considering the history of African female artists on the Billboard World Albums chart. The last time an African female artist had an album chart for this long was nearly four decades ago, with Cape Verdean legend Cesária Évora’s self-titled album spending 66 weeks on the chart in 1995.

As TYLA continues its impressive run on the charts, fans and industry observers alike are eager to see what Tyla will accomplish next.
