South Africa Mourns the Passing of Legendary DJ Choc Ngwenya

The South African music industry is in mourning following the death of one of its most respected and influential pioneers, DJ Choc. Born Mbuyiselo Ngwenya, the veteran DJ and music producer passed away at the age of 51, leaving behind an indelible legacy that spans decades of cultural and musical influence.

DJ Choc played a crucial role in shaping the evolution of South African music, particularly within the kwaito and early house music movements. His sound not only defined an era but also laid the groundwork for the emergence of newer genres like amapiano, where his presence continued to be felt through his mentorship and familial connection to the scene – his daughter, Duduzile Ngwenya, better known as amapiano star Lady Du, confirmed his passing in a heartfelt family statement shared on Instagram.

“It is with deep sorrow and immense respect that we confirm the passing of South African music legend DJ Choc Ngwenya,” the family wrote. While the cause of his death has not been disclosed, the news has triggered an emotional wave of tributes from fellow artists, fans, and colleagues across the nation.

More than just a DJ, Choc was revered as a mentor, father figure, and cultural connector – a bridge between generations in South African music. Known for his authenticity, passion, and dedication to his craft, he inspired countless artists and nurtured talent both in his family and the broader creative community.

Since the announcement, social media platforms have been flooded with messages of remembrance, gratitude, and grief. Fans have shared stories of his performances, wisdom, and kindness, painting a portrait of a man who was as beloved offstage as he was behind the decks.

The Ngwenya family has expressed immense gratitude for the support they’ve received during this painful time and asked for space to grieve privately.

“At this time, the Ngwenya family kindly asks for privacy as they navigate this profound loss. We are grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and tributes already shared,” they said.

Details regarding memorial and funeral services will be announced at a later date.

“We thank you for allowing the family space to mourn, reflect, and honour his extraordinary life. May his soul rest in power.”

DJ Choc’s legacy will continue to echo through the beats, rhythms, and voices of South African music for generations to come.
