Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in federal court in Manhattan on Monday, May 5, as jury selection officially began in one of the most high-profile criminal trials in recent memory. The Grammy-winning rapper and Bad Boy Records founder is facing a sweeping array of charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for prostitution—offenses that could see him sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
Dressed sharply in a blue blazer, Combs cut a somber figure as he addressed Judge Arun Subramanian during the proceedings. “I’m sorry, your honor, I’m a little nervous today,” he admitted, requesting a bathroom break. The judge initially denied the request but eventually granted a brief two-minute recess.
A panel of 12 jurors and six alternates was selected after more than 600 prospective jurors filled out extensive questionnaires ahead of the trial. Opening arguments are expected to begin later this week.
The charges stem from a series of disturbing allegations that have emerged over the past year. Most recently, a man accused Combs of drugging and raping him when he was a minor. The claim is part of a broader pattern of accusations, with multiple male victims alleging sexual assault by Combs between 2019 and 2022.
In total, Combs is accused of sexually abusing as many as 120 individuals—both men and women—including one as young as nine years old. He was arrested on September 16, 2024, and subsequently indicted by federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Among the anticipated witnesses is singer Cassie Ventura, Combs’ ex-girlfriend, whose testimony could prove pivotal. The trial will be open to the public, though it will not be streamed online.
