If you’re a fan of handsome men wearing well-stitched kaftans, displaying intensity, and actors who bring characters to life with and without speaking, then Efa Iwara needs no introduction.
From his rapping days to The Men’s Club and the AMVCA-nominated Showmax original, Princess on a Hill, this is not his first rodeo. While many people may still be sleeping on the show, it has dropped jaws and raised the eyebrows of critics, in the best way possible.
Now, with multiple AMVCA nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Efa Iwara, the royal drama is being considered a landmark moment in African streaming TV.
When Netng caught up with Efa over a phone interview, he was as chill as ever—his voice laced with the familiar blend of humility and humour that has quietly become his signature.
“I don’t really think about nominations when I’m working on a project,“ Efa says, almost too modestly, when he was asked if he was surprised about the AMVCA nominations. “The focus is always on making something exciting and entertaining.”
But when Princess on a Hill raked in those surprise nominations, even he had to admit—this one hit different. He did not watch the AMVCA nominations on Africa Magic channels, but his phone blew up with notifications from his manager and fans.
“I was very happy and grateful,” he said. “It’s always great when your work gets recognised, especially when it’s something you and the entire team poured so much into.”
And pour they did. According to Efa, the critical success and acceptance of Princess on a Hill wasn’t magic—it was due to the meticulous efforts of the entire cast and crew.
“It was a combination of things,” he explained. “The story was unique. The production value was top-tier.
But just in case you thought he’d be resting on the AMVCA buzz, think again. The actor-slash-heartthrob has big plans. In response to what’s next after the awards season. He says;
“2025 and 2026 are going to be very interesting,” he teased. “There are a couple of international projects I’m really excited about. Can’t say too much yet because they are feature , but I can’t wait for Nigeria, Africa, and the world to see what’s coming.”
