On his debut EP Now or Never, Tyler Linkman emerges as an artist trying to find his voice, and it leaves a strong first impression.
The influences of legends like Mac Miller, Drake and Action Bronson loom large, especially over Linkman’s flow. Sometimes it serves him well, but other times he gets lost. That being said, his ear is impeccable, and over time, he’ll learn to tailor his talents in a way that feels original.
The best parts of Now or Never are those where genres cross paths, like on “NEW WHIP” or the exceptional bars of “MACK’S REVENGE” and “NO SLEEP.” In these moments, Linkman feels most himself—his flow is less derivative, and as a result, his capabilities shine.
Ultimately, Now or Never is a solid effort from Tyler Linkman. Its production and genre fluidity are impressive, and while it might be hard for him to establish a unique identity right now, getting swept up in the sea of derivative hip-hop that’s already out there, he lays the groundwork for something special in the future.
