The Super Falcons of Nigeria have released an official statement following the successful surgery of South Africa’s Salgado after her WAFCON 2024 semi-final injury.

Following the shocking and unexpected injury suffered by the Bayana Bayana of South Africa player Salgado in the WAFCON 2024 semi-final, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have released an official statement sending their best wishes following her successful surgery.

Winger Gabriela Salgado was stretchered off late in the second half following an injury sustained during South Africa’s 2-1 loss to the Super Falcons on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. She is currently recovering in hospital and will remain with the Banyana Banyana squad until she is discharged. Salgado is expected to return home with the team next week.

“Gabi suffered a mid-shaft fracture in her left leg during the match against Nigeria and has since undergone successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca. While she will be sidelined for the remainder of the year, we’re grateful for the outstanding care she received from the Banyana Banyana medical staff, CAF officials, and the hospital team. We were confident in the medical expertise available in Morocco and deeply appreciate the professionalism and support shown throughout this period,” said team doctor Dr. Lindi Mokoena.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria through their media officer, Mary Akinsola shared a statement that read, “The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family, from players and coaches to staff were profoundly saddened to learn of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado during yesterday’s match.”

Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead. We are holding Gabriela, her teammates, her family and close friends in our hearts, sending our deepest wishes for strength and resilience.”

Our immediate focus, and our enduring concern, is solely for her wellbeing, comfort, and recovery. The spirit of competition instantly fades in moments like these, replaced by a shared sense of care for a fellow athlete.”

As fellow members of this football community, The Super Falcons NGR stands firmly alongside Banyana Banyana in solidarity and support. Our collective wish is for Gabriela’s steady healing, renewed strength, and a return to the pitch when she is ready, surrounded by the unwavering support of the team and community.”
