In a recent appearance on The Morning Brief, renowned Nollywood actor Bob Manuel Udokwu shared his insights on the vibrant landscape of Nigeria’s film industry, particularly in light of British actor Idris Elba being cast as Okonkwo in the upcoming adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s literary classic, Things Fall Apart.

Udokwu, a veteran of Nollywood, emphasized the wealth of talent within Nigeria, asserting that the nation is home to numerous exceptional actors who could authentically portray such iconic roles.

While he expressed respect for Idris Elba’s talent, he argued that a Nigerian actor might better capture Okonkwo’s essence, given the story’s cultural significance.

“I believe we have top-class actors right here in Nigeria who understand the roots of this narrative,” Udokwu stated.

“It’s a discussion worth having, but we also need to recognize the talent we possess domestically.”

His remarks come amid a flurry of social media reactions to the casting choice, sparking a broader conversation about representation and authenticity in film adaptations.

During the interview, Udokwu also touched on what he sees as a crucial element for the growth of Nollywood: collaboration.

“Nollywood has come of age,” he asserted. “We don’t need to prove ourselves anymore; we just need to work together more effectively.”

He highlighted that collaborative projects are already underway, mentioning his involvement in a production featuring major Indian actors and a Hollywood actress.

“What Nollywood needs now is more partnerships with our counterparts in Europe and North America, and I’m excited to see that happening,” he concluded.
