The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is making waves in Nigeria and across Africa’s film industry with a bold new initiative aimed at nurturing young talent.
In partnership with premier West African entertainment powerhouse Filmhouse Group and the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), AFRIFF is set to launch a five-day program on Monday, February 24, 2025, designed to equip secondary school and university students with essential industry knowledge and hands-on experience in film, animation, and fashion.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to cultivate a new generation of Nigerian creatives, providing them with interactive sessions led by industry professionals. Among those sharing their expertise will be Chioma Ude, Founder of AFRIFF; Ladun Awobokun, Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Entertainment & Filmhouse Group; and Marshall Michelle, Program Director for Fashion Image & Fashion Photography at UCA.
Their sessions will cover career pathways in the creative industry, offering students a rare glimpse into the realities and opportunities that await in film and related sectors.
A major highlight of the program is the fireside chat scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, 2025, themed “The Business of Film.” During this conversation, Chioma Ude and Ladun Awobokun will explore the intersection of creativity and commerce, discussing industry trends and professional opportunities.
This session promises to deliver key insights into how creative talent can navigate and thrive in the competitive world of filmmaking.
In addition to its educational mission, AFRIFF has also joined forces with the Lagos State Government to bolster youth empowerment and skills development. This strategic partnership is part of Lagos State’s wider plan to harness the potential of its youthful population, especially in light of the economic and cultural prospects presented by the annual “Detty December” tourist season.
By equipping young people with practical skills, the initiative aims to boost the creative sector’s contribution to the state’s economic growth.
Speaking on the partnership, Kene Okwuosa, CEO of Filmhouse Group, remarked, “Sustaining the Nigerian entertainment industry requires investing in the next generation of creatives. At Filmhouse, we are committed to equipping young talents with the skill, knowledge, and network they need to thrive. This initiative reflects our vision to develop Africa’s creative sector and foster long-term industry growth”
Echoing this sentiment, Chioma Ude stated, “AFRIFF has always been dedicated to talent development. Partnering with Filmhouse Group and UCA strengthens our mission of providing young creatives with access to world-class education, mentorship, and industry exposure early-on.”
AFRIFF’s new initiative not only marks a significant step in bridging the gap between education and industry but also reinforces its role as a critical catalyst for change in Nigeria’s film sector. By fostering innovation and cultivating new talent, AFRIFF and its partners are positioning the creative industry for sustainable growth across Africa.
