Meet VOLK – an Afrikaans alternative rock band formed and fronted by Frank Freeman, who needed a musical outlet to express his way of being Afrikaans in his home language.
With Dillon Myburgh on drums and Mika Burger on bass, the group turned to Honeymoan’s Josh Berry and Mike Zietsman (PHfat) for the mixing and mastering of their latest single “ZAR” – a hard and heavy rock offering that is brilliantly brash in talking about cash.
I’m obsessed with everything about Freeman’s vocal delivery of this track. It’s swaggy, grungy and deliciously languid in its delivery, and it’s the royal debauchery of his seething voice that makes this track.
Heady electric guitars bring blazing texture, and while Freeman’s arrangement is traditional in many ways, his distinct personality sets this track apart, frolicking in the left-field as one of the best Afrikaans rock tracks of the year.
They’re set to play their last show for the year at Surfa Rosa on Friday 25 October, and it promises to be unruly. Get your tickets here. You’ll find me stage-right.
