American-Ghanaian singer and songwriter Amaarae has offered an insightful explanation into the deep-rooted cultural reasons behind Ghanaians’ enduring love for eggs.

Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Madame Joyce, the Sad Girls Love Money star revealed that the tradition traces back to a time when meat was considered a household luxury, often reserved for the head of the family.

“There’s a whole history to that,” Amaarae explained. “Back in the days, your father would get the most meat in the food. If your mum cooked stew or anything else, the meat would be for your dad. The kids got a small piece of meat, plus eggs, to balance out their protein.”

Amaarae went on to highlight how eggs, being both affordable and nutritious, gradually became a staple with Ghanaians and their homes. “That’s why egg has become a staple in our country, it’s a cheap way to get protein if meat is too expensive. Back then, chicken was a Christmas luxury. Now it’s normal,” she added.

Amaarae’s comments have since sparked conversation online, with many Ghanaians affirming the historical context behind one of the nation’s beloved food traditions.
