Arsenal slammed with heavy fine for player on referee incident

Arsenal FC have received a heavy player on referee fine in the Premier League following the Lewis-Skelly red card incident.

Arsenal have officially been charged with a heavy fine by the FA following the controversy surrounding Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card.

During their Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week, Arsenal were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Lewis-Skelly received a straight red card for a challenge on Wolves defender Matt Doherty. The decision, made by referee Michael Oliver, sparked immediate debate among fans and pundits. However, despite a VAR review, the referee upheld his initial call.

The FA has now provided an update on the situation, confirming that Arsenal have been charged due to their reaction to the incident. An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a £65,000 fine on the club in relation to the match on Saturday, January 25.

“Arsenal were charged with failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an appropriate manner around the 43rd minute,” the FA’s statement read, adding that the club accepted the charge.

Following a regulatory hearing, the commission released its written reasoning, which included a letter from Arsenal. The club argued that their players remained “civil and not aggressive,” did not engage in “gesticulating or accusatory behavior,” and refrained from actions that could be considered “offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting, or provocative.”

However, the FA countered this by noting that at one point, as many as nine Arsenal players were gathered closely around the referee. Furthermore, they stated that the red card later being overturned on appeal did not excuse the players’ reaction nor serve as grounds for leniency.
