In a recent statement the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have shared a response to reports of Favour Ofili dumping the country for Turkey.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has responded to reports that Nigerian sprint star, Favour Ofili, has opted to switch her allegiance to Turkey.
According to AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, while the federation has not received any formal communication from either Ofili or World Athletics, they have acknowledged the reports with a mix of shock and disappointment.
Ofili, one of Nigeria’s most promising athletes and a national record holder, reportedly submitted a request to change her sporting nationality.
In his statement, Okowa addressed the frustrations that may have led to Ofili’s decision, citing that while mistakes may have been made in the past, efforts have been taken in recent years to improve support for athletes, particularly around funding and anti-doping compliance.
He also mentioned that the AFN had hoped to mend fences with Ofili, who has not participated in recent national trials or events.
“We read and heard about her decision from the media. It’s unfortunate, but if that is truly what she wants, we won’t stop her,” Okowa stated.
“She remains our sister and daughter, and we wish her well.”
World Athletics regulations stipulate a three-year waiting period for athletes changing national representation, except under special circumstances. As of now, Ofili is still officially listed under Nigeria.
