Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has made history at the 2025 MOBO Awards, where she won two major awards during the yearly ceremony that celebrates outstanding work in music of black origin. The ceremony was held on Wednesday, February 18, in Newcastle, United Kingdom, and it was here that Ayra Starr accepted the highly sought-after ‘Best International Act’ award, becoming the first African woman to win this prestigious title. She also took home ‘Best African Music Act’, another record as the first female to win in 16 years.
Ayra Starr also joined the league of Burna Boy and Wizkid by becoming the Nigerian acts to win the best international act at the Mobo Awards, Wizkid won it twice in 2017 and 2021 while Burna Boy won it in 2020 and 2022.
Also, Darkoo, the Nigerian British rapper, gladly received the ‘Best Female Act’ award, and Central Cee won the ‘Best Male Act’ award, both adding to the evening’s electric atmosphere. Other winners of note were 90sbabyshow, the hit three-man podcast that won the award of ‘Best Media Personality’, and *Odeal*, a Nigerian-born singer who was awarded as the *‘Best Newcomer’.
