Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie is enjoying a fresh wave of recognition as his classic hit Because of English makes its debut on the Spotify Nigeria Top 100 Chart, nearly four decades after its original release.
The 1984 record entered the chart at No. 99, marking the veteran’s first-ever appearance on the streaming platform’s coveted list.
This resurgence comes in the wake of a high-profile link-up with Afrobeats superstar Davido. The DMW boss who recently dropped his fifth studio album 5ive, publicly credited Because of English by Bright Chimezie as the creative inspiration behind his new track With You featuring Omah Lay.
The pair’s connection, which began with a video call, which led to a face-to-face meeting in Lagos. In viral clips posted on Monday, May 19, 2025, Davido was seen warmly hosting Bright Chimezie, praising his musical legacy and bonding over their shared love for authentic Nigerian sounds.
Sources close to Davido, including socialite Cubana Chief priest, revealed that the veteran singer’s Lagos visit wasn’t just social. Bright Chimezie is reportedly collaborating with Davido on a forthcoming music video, with fans speculating it could be for With You. In a caption celebrating the moment, Cubana Chiefpriest wrote: “@officialbrightchimezie Welcome Sir, We Love & Celebrate You, Thank You For Making @davido This Happy & Excited. We’re Rolling Out A Dope Video In A Bit For The Biggest Song In The World. Indeed Legends Can Never Die.”
