Chelsea owner Todd Boehly breaks silence amid fans’ protests

Todd Boehly has directly responded to the protest of Chelsea fans demanding a change of club ownership following their poor run of form.

Ahead of Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over Southampton, a group of supporters gathered outside Stamford Bridge to express their dissatisfaction and demand that the owners “leave our club.”

In response, the American ownership group, led by Todd Boehly, addressed the fans’ concerns, urging them to be patient.

Fans have grown frustrated with Boehly’s leadership, as the club has yet to see success on the pitch despite spending over £1 billion on transfers in the past two and a half years.

Since Clearlake Capital and Boehly became the majority owners in 2022, Chelsea has finished 12th and 6th in the Premier League, with four different managers, including interim boss Frank Lampard, at the helm.

However, the team has not achieved significant success. The 2024/25 season began with Enzo Maresca as head coach, and although they started well, their form dramatically declined leading up to the Southampton match, with just three wins in their last 12 games.

At the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, Boehly addressed the issue saying, “I just think it is par for the course. The sooner you learn you are not going to keep all the people happy all the time, the freedom shows up. We are just trying to execute a plan and recognise things aren’t linear, and we are trending in the right direction.”

He went on to add, “The trend is moving in the right direction and that’s the thing that really matters. In June, it will be three years in charge. That’s not a lot of time, especially when you get to 50, 60 or 70 years old in life. It’s a whirlwind of activity and steep learning curve, but I think that’s also a good thing.”
