Craig Lucas has graduated into a class of his own on new EP Tip Of My Tongue, a sassy, sexy and fun declaration of self-expression — which may even be his best offering yet.
The evolution displayed here emerges through Lucas’ fearless exploration of different sounds, starting with an indie air on opening track “Falling In Love” — a pop anthem with digestible radio appeal.
Lucas then moves into provocative themes such as hookup culture, addiction and grief. “FUCK BOY” featuring Cubbi sounds like a risqué Westlife song while “High, Drunk & Horny” keeps up the cheeky energy.
But Lucas’ brash humour is not even the best thing about Tip Of My Tongue. It’s the raw emotion. His vulnerability shines brightest on “Yours” — a haunting reflection on the traumas that have shaped him as a singer. Here, Craig strips away the playful facade to reveal something achingly genuine — a moment that elevates the entire album from entertainment to art.
Old and new fans are treated to a bolder and more self-assured version of the pop artist, one unafraid to be messy, honest and human. That Craig can sing is undeniable, but what stands out on Tip Of My Tongue is the songwriting itself. The album functions as a marker of freedom in some ways, a declaration of artistic independence. It’s as though Lucas is saying, you’ve heard me before, but you’ve never seen me.
