Nigerian music superstar David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has publicly affirmed his Igbo heritage while responding to a divisive social media post that criticized his close ties with the Igbo community.

The controversy began after an X user, @Yakbel, made a tribal comment on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, warning Davido against associating with Igbos and suggesting betrayal was inevitable. The post read:“Davido just dey carry Ibo full body, until when dem betray am before e rest. Yoruba boy dey frolick with Ibos in 2025, they want your head and everything you have to belong to them. You can never satisfy Ibos ooo. IBOs are not people you surround yourself with as a Yoruba man.”

In a swift and bold response, Davido dismissed the tribal sentiment, replying: “Lol, I AM IGBO by blood.”

His declaration has since drawn widespread applause across social media, with many Nigerians commending the Afrobeats star for promoting unity and rejecting divisive rhetoric.

The comment surfaced shortly after Davido hosted veteran highlife legend Bright Chimezie at his Lagos residence on Monday, May 19, 2025. The two artists had connected days earlier via a video call, during which Davido acknowledged Chimezie’s classic track Because of English as the inspiration behind his latest single With You featuring Omah Lay.

Beyond music, Davido’s ties to Igbo heritage run deep. His wife, Chioma Adeleke, hails from Imo State, and his late paternal grandmother, Esther Nnena Adeleke (née Akparah), was also of Igbo descent.

The singer’s statement has further fueled conversations on cultural unity in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with many lauding him for standing firm against tribal prejudice.
