Legendary British singer Elton John has voiced strong opposition to the legalization of marijuana in the United States and Canada, calling it “one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”
In a candid interview with Time Magazine, the 77-year-old icon expressed deep concerns about the dangers of cannabis, drawing from his personal experiences with the drug.
“I maintain that it is addictive. It leads to other drugs. And when you are stoned—and I have been stoned—you do not think normally,” John said.
The Rocket Man singer criticized the move toward legalization, warning of its long-term consequences on individuals and society.
Elton John also opened up about a painful chapter in his life: his inability to help his close friend, the late British singer George Michael, who battled substance abuse issues. Michael passed away on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53 due to heart and liver-related complications.
“It is tough to tell someone that they are being an asshole, and it is tough to hear. Eventually, I made the choice to admit that I am being an asshole,” John said, reflecting on his journey of self-awareness and recovery.
With a career spanning six decades, Elton John is celebrated as one of the best-selling artists in history, boasting over 300 million records sold worldwide. Hits like Your Song, Rocket Man, and I’m Still Standing have cemented his place as a music legend.
The singer recently revealed that he has lost his eyesight.
