At 32, Martinez is focused on ending Aston Villa’s long trophy drought, with the club’s last major honour being the 1996 League Cup. Speaking ahead of an FA Cup third-round tie against West Ham on Friday, Martinez reflected on his ambitions, “I want silverware for this club. I was very frustrated when we were knocked out by Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. The fans deserve a trip to Wembley at the end of the season. It’s something the club has missed for many years. I know how special winning cups is, both for myself and for the fans, and I want to experience that with Aston Villa.”
He added, “Anything is possible in football. When I joined, the team had just finished 17th. Since then, we’ve progressed, finishing 11th, seventh, and fourth. This season has been good, though not exactly what I want. Competing in the Champions League and fighting for a top-four spot is tough. We had to sell players, and the new signings needed time to adapt, but now they’re settling in, and we are doing well.”
