Emilia Perez, Cynthia Erivo could make history at 2025 Oscars

Emilia Pérez, the Netflix film, is making waves at the 2025 Oscars, earning a historic 13 nominations—the most of any film this year.

This is a new milestone for non-English language films. It doesn’t just celebrate excellence in film, but also the diversity and richness of the film in telling global stories. With these nominations, Emilia Perez joins a handful of films that have gained wide recognition. This movie is just one nomination shy of a record of 14 nominations, with classics like All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. In particular, Emilia Perez received awards in several categories. including best movies Best Director, Best Leading Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.

With streaming services and independent distributors performing strong, Netflix received 16 nominations, the most nominations for any individual distributor this year. Emilia Perez is the frontrunner for Netflix has it amassed 13 nominations from the 16 nominations for the Streaming platform.

In related news to the 2025 Oscars nominations, Cynthia Erivo received an Oscar nomination for “Wicked.” Cynthia Erivo, 38, a British-Nigerian actress and singer, has been nominated for the 2025 Academy Awards. Erivo is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Wicked. which is the highly anticipated film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical. This nomination puts her back in contention to become the youngest recipient of the EGOT title, the title is given to winners of the Emmys, Grammys, Tony Award, and Oscars altogether.

Erivo’s notable film achievements include a 2016 Tony Award for her performance in Color Purple on Broadway, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for the same role, and an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in the television miniseries Genius: Aretha. Now, with a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, Erivo now has the opportunity to write her name in the history books of the film industry. The Wicked film, in which Erivo played the role of Elphaba in the film Wicked. Erivo’s nomination for her powerful performance is part of Wicked’s successful performance at the 2025 Oscars, where the film received 10 nominations for Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and Best Picture.

She is now a 3x Oscar nominee and she earned her second-Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, firstly nominated in 2020 for her role in Harriet and now in 2025 for her role in Wicked.

If she wins the Best Actress award at the 2025 Oscars, she will go one step further by becoming the youngest person to join the EGOT Club at the age of 38, with the youngest ever being at 39, this feat was achieved by Robert Lopez in 1975.

Conan O’Brien has been announced as the host of the 97th Oscars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
