Newcastle United’s player, Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct by the English Football Association for alleged breaches of betting rules.
Tonali is already serving a 10-month ban issued by the FIGC for breaching rules the betting rules. The FA alleged that the Italian placed bets on games between August 12, and October 12, 2023, which was just a few weeks after he joined the Magpies. He has until April 5, 2024, to respond to the allegations.
The FA statement read as follows,
“Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules. It wa’s alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023. Sandro Tonali has until 5 April 2024 to respond.”
Newcastle have also released a statement acknowledging the allegation that their player has been charged with. According to the club, they are doing everything in their capacity to support Tonali.
The statement reads as follows;
“Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”
Tonali was investigated by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office just a few weeks after he made his debut for Newcastle, he was later found guilty of illegal betting activity. He was issued a ten-month ban by the Italian Football Federation and was approved by FIFA but the FA had to conduct a different investigation of their own.
