Former manager of Enyimba Football Club, Finidi George has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The reports coming from the camp of the Nigeria men’s senior team is that Finidi George left his position after the disappointing results against Benin Republic and South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifying games. However, there have not been any official statement from the NFF, at the time of reporting this news.
Why did Finidi George resign as Super Eagles coach?
There is no specific reason why Finidi left his role as the head coach of the Super Eagles but there is a possibility that the NFF’s decision to appoint a technical adviser ahead of the AFCON 2025 and the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifying games could have triggered his decision.
However, just one point from six in his first two official matches left the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup hopes in the balance and Finidi’s job was not secured
What does this mean for the Super Eagles?
The NFF would have to race against time in looking for a new coach for the Super Eagles before the next round of qualifying games for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
The 53-year-old was appointed last month ( May 2024) ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic. Nigeria is currently fifth in the group with three points behind Zimbabwe in the last position.
