Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder, Michael Essien is currently in a financial crisis which could see him lose his two houses in Ghana.

The sale of Michael Essien’s properties was ordered by the court as legal actions were taken by creditors to recover the outstanding debts. According to reports from Ghana, the value of one of these properties is estimated to be between $20 million and $30 million.

Essien’s current financial is due to the huge loans he took from various banks and financial institutions in Ghana, these loans, which the former football star has struggled to repay. This led to the court’s intervention, the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court (Commercial Division) issued the order for the sale on June 12, 2024

The former Ghanaian midfielder started his football journey at Bastia in France before he moved to Olympique Lyonnais. His prowess on the field caught the attention of Chelsea, where he became one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League.

His time at Chelsea was the height of his career, which includes, Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy. He also played for other top European clubs, including Real Madrid and AC Milan.
