Global artists performing at EOTY parties: normal or unacceptable?

A few days ago, Davido performed at the Fidelity Bank end of the year party and was scolded by many Nigerians. Some felt he shouldn’t be doing such gigs anymore due to his status as one of our global artists and others felt he was taking money out of the pockets of the younger artists they think should be doing such gigs. Many concluded that he was a level below his peers, and that was why he could be booked for such shows.

X users didn’t fail to link the performance to the Puma saga involving Davido, Wizkid, Rema and Kizz Daniel a few months ago. Rumor had it that Davido was contacted for the deal after Rema and Kizz Daniel turned down offers from Puma. The sporting brand initially had Wizkid as their ambassador from Africa and were looking for other options after his deal expired. Insiders said in deleted tweets that Davido’s deal was 1/4 of Wizkid’s last deal and 1/16 of what was demanded by the parties that rejected the deal.

Twitter users proceeded to play judge on the case and once again scolded Davido for accepting smaller gigs with his performance at Fidelity’s end of the year party. They would be heavily surprised when Africa’s biggest artist Burna Boy performed at GT Bank’s end of the year party.

The party which happened yesterday had guests like Burna Boy, Wande Coal, Fireboy Dml, Young Jonn, Spinall, OdumoduBlvck, Shallipopi, Falz and more, and each of them performed at least five songs. The end of the year party felt like a proper concert, and fans got a good reward for banking all year with GT.

If the biggest artist in a continent can perform at end of the year parties for banks, then there’s no acceptable grounds for chastising his peers that do same. We saw Olamide at UBA, Davido at Fidelity and Burna at GT Bank, and it can only mean one thing. No matter how successful a child becomes, he can never be older than his father. There’s some things that can’t be erased from normalcy, and our global superstars will always come home.
