The Nigerian gospel music community is mourning the loss of one of its most vibrant voices—Bolaji Olarewaju, fondly known as Big Bolaji or Big B, who passed away on Easter Saturday, April 19, 2025.
The singer and ordained RCCG pastor died after a brief illness, according to a statement released by his family on Saturday. Known for his energetic performances, booming voice, and unwavering devotion to both God and his craft, Big Bolaji was a larger-than-life figure whose presence lit up every stage he touched.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bolaji Olarewaju, affectionately known as ‘Big B,’” the family shared. “Bolaji’s life was a testament to his passion for music, his unwavering faith, and his dedication to uplifting those around him.”
From church conventions to gospel concerts, Big Bolaji was a force, effortlessly blending praise with performance and turning every gathering into an experience. But beyond the spotlight, he was a devoted husband, father, and mentor to many.
His family’s tribute described him as “a cherished father, husband, brother, and an esteemed figure in both the church community and music industry,” adding that “his legacy is not only in the melodies he created but in the lives he touched and the unquantifiable joy he spread.”
The family has requested privacy as they grieve and has promised to announce funeral arrangements in due course. “We take solace in knowing that his absence with us is his presence with the Lord,” they added.
Lafup, the Ibadan-based comedian, has already paid his tributes on Instagram, writing that “We lost a big brother in the big city of not only in the big city of Ibadan, but the Nigerian Christian community… this is sad, very sad. RIP Big Bolaji, you were a force, mentor, and inspiration.”
As tributes pour in from across the gospel and entertainment world, one thing is clear: Big Bolaji’s voice may be silent, but his impact will echo for generations.
