Barcelona Football Club are reportedly set to sack Xavi Hernandez at the end of this current campaign due to a recent interview he had about the state of the club.

Barcelona fans might get to see a new manager in the dugout when the 2024/25 football season begins, as the future of Xavi Hernandez at the club is not certain.

What happened between Xavi and Barcelona?

Xavi recently confirmed a contract extension with Barcelona after both parties reached an agreement that it was in their best interest for the Spaniard to continue his role as manager of the Catalonia club. However, things took a turn when Xavi spoke at a pre-match press conference before the league game against Almeria, which did not sit well with the board at Barcelona.

What did Xavi say?

He was asked if Barcelona had what it takes to compete for major trophies with the current squad. Xavi responded to the question sincerely, but his response may have put his job at risk.

“We are going to try to compete against Madrid. I think that the couple must understand that the situation is very difficult. Above all, on an economic level. We have an economic situation that has nothing to do with 25 years ago, we can no longer go out and pick and say I want this one, this one, and that one.’ We are not in the same conditions as other clubs with very advantageous economic situations.
The Barcelona fans have to understand it. That does not mean that we do not want to compete, but that is Barca’s situation at the moment. We need stability and time, but we will try to compete.”

What does this mean for Xavi’s future at Barcelona?

There are reports from Spain that the board believes that Xavi’s response does not show the confidence that they expect from the manager of a club like Barcelona. Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed in a post on his official X account that Rafa Marques remains at the top of the list to replace Xavi.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Xavi’s future, Barcelona won the game against Almeria 2-0 and they will be looking to finish the season on a high note by securing victories against Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla on May 19 and 26, 2024, respectively.
