Chelsea supporters might have to get used to the fact that Mauricio Pochetrino is not leaving the club anytime soon, following the recent developments at the club.

There has been a call for the Argentine to be sacked by most of the club’s supporters after the team lost 4-2 to the Wolves at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, February 4, 2024. However, there are reports that Chelsea can not sack Pochettino as it stands.

Why can’t Chelsea sack Mauricio Pochettino?

Chelsea Football Club face the risk of breaking financial fair play rules because of the amount of money that has been spent since Todd Boehly took over the club in 2022. According to the Daily Mail, sacking Mauricio Pochettino could put the club in danger of breaching Premier League spending rules.

If Chelsea decide to pay off Pochettino before June 2024, they will have to pay him £10 million which might see them on the brink of failing the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

How much has Chelsea spent since Todd Boehly took over?

The Blues have spent over £1 billion on new players since the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital takeover.

What is the Premier League’s rule of FFP?

Premier League clubs are currently allowed to lose a maximum of £105m over three years, though there are certain exemptions, such as spending on infrastructure, women’s football and investment in youth.

What is next for Mauricio Pochettino?

Pochettino is under immense pressure at the club but as it stands he has the full support of the Chelsea board who have decided to stick with him until the end of this season. This will allow them to take a proper evaluation of the team’s performance.

Chelsea face Aston Villa in a fourth-round replay this week before facing Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Pochettino will hope that these results go his way so that a bit of pressure can be taken off him.
