Football fans may witness a potential top-of-the-table rematch of the El Clasico played at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
This could happen if Barcelona’s goal was wrongly cancelled by the VAR officials during the match. During the game, Barcelona lost 3-2, with Jude Bellingham scoring the winning goal in stoppage time.
This result leaves the Galacticos 11 points clear at the top of the league table. Andreas Christensen and Fermin Lopez scored for Barca, while Vinicius Junior’s penalty and Lucas Vazquez’s equaliser kept Real Madrid in the game. Bellingham scored the third goal for Real which sealed the result.
Joan Laporta, the President of Barcelona, has confirmed that they may seek a rematch of the match if they can confirm that Lamine Yamal’s goal crossed the line.
He stated,
“We ask the RFEF to provide us with all the images and audios of the play [Barça’s cancelled goal]. If it was a legal goal, we do not rule out requesting a rematch of the match.”
La Liga does not use goal-line technology, unlike other major leagues in Europe. As a result, the referee must rely on VAR officials to determine whether a ball has crossed the line or not.
