Renowned Nigerian filmmaker and producer, Kayode Peters, has passed away in Toronto, Canada, just three days after celebrating his 14th wedding anniversary with his wife, Alexis Peters.

Peters, widely recognised for his work on the popular comedy series “Flatmates,” succumbed to an undisclosed illness on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

The actor/producer tied the knot with partner Alexander, a graduate from the University of Lagos on the 25th of June 2011 at the Church of Assumption, Falomo, Lagos.

The wedding was attended by family and friends of the couple and a of course well wishers. In a telephone conversation with Nigerian Entertainment Today (NET) after the wedding, Peters explained that he and Alexander met about two years ago before they tied the knot in Lagos.

Just days before his death, on Wednesday, Peters had taken to Instagram to share heartfelt photos of his family, commemorating his special day.

In a touching caption, he expressed profound gratitude and love for his wife, Alexis, writing, “Happy anniversary baby. You have been there through the years. Through thick and thin. Your prayers, your spirit, have sustained us over the years. Many more years to us Mami. I love you @alexisweetness.”

In response, his wife wrote, “Happy Wedding Anniversary my Love. I have no regrets doing life with you till this day because you make it all worth it and because I love you dearly. I pray that God who brought us together and has kept us through the years will keep us together till we are old and grey in Good health, Long life, Happiness and Prosperity. Amen 🙏❤️🫂 love you Sug”

However, the joy of the anniversary was short-lived. On Saturday, his family announced the tragic news in a statement shared on his Instagram page. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, Kayode Peters Adewumi, who passed on peacefully this morning June 28, 2025 in Toronto, Canada,” the statement read.

The family revealed that Peters, affectionately known as “KP,” had bravely battled a long-term illness. “KP braved, challenged and conquered a long time illness until his last breath this morning,” they stated.

Described as “a cherished son, husband, father, brother, and friend, a gifted filmmaker, actor and producer whose work inspired many,” the statement emphasized his character beyond his professional achievements. “Beyond his talent, it was his kindness, warmth, and generous spirit that truly defined him. He touched countless lives, both on and off the screen, and will be deeply missed.”

The Adewumi Family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they make arrangements for his funeral, with further details to be shared in due course. Kayode Peters began his illustrious career in the early 2000s, gaining significant recognition after producing the television drama “Twilight Zone.”
