Afrobeats took center stage in the heart of Boston as Rema and Burna Boy made history, earning official city honors that celebrated their global influence and cultural impact on the international music scene.

When Afrobeats meets city halls, magic happens. Nigerian superstars Rema and Burna Boy have not only conquered global charts, sold-out arenas, and rocked award stages, but they’ve also etched their names into the history books of Boston, USA.

In a move that proves Afrobeats is no longer just a sound but a global movement, the City of Boston honored both artists with prestigious civic recognitions, turning their music into more than entertainment but official city business.

Rema’s crown moment in Boston

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, fans witnessed Rema’s star shine even brighter when Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu awarded him a Certificate of Recognition. But this wasn’t your typical accolade, it applauded his “global influence and ability to bring joy to people in Boston and beyond,” celebrating the young Afrobeats phenom for carrying Africa’s spirit on global stages. This honor came right after Rema’s electrifying performance at MGM Music Hall, leaving Boston in awe.

Before Rema’s feat, Grammy-winner Burna Boy made history when the Boston City Council declared March 2, 2023, as “Burna Boy Day”, yes, an entire day in his name. Alongside a Certificate of Honor, the city celebrated Burna for bridging cultures through his rich blend of Afrobeat, reggae, and dancehall, making him one of Africa’s greatest music ambassadors.

These honors go beyond music. They signal a cultural shift, a moment where African music, identity, and artistry are not just heard but officially recognized on civic platforms in the West. It’s a powerful statement that Afrobeats has arrived, and it’s here to stay.
